Job Title:
Fifth Grade Teacher

Location:
Elementary School Campus

Years at Corpus Christi:
Over eight years
What is your title and responsibilities for the school?
I am a 5th grade teacher. I teach Math and Science to the entire 5th grade, and Reading and Religion to my homeroom. I also help with the Jason Project after school as well as the Math club.

When did you start with the school?
I originally started with Corpus Christi in 1995. I taught Kindergarten at the ECC for two years, then I taught 5th grade until 2001. My family and I moved to North Carolina, where I taught 5th grade Science and Religion at a Catholic school for three years. Then we moved to Massachusetts. I taught 7th and 8th grade Religion and Language Arts for two years at a Catholic School outside of Boston. When I moved back to Northern Virginia in 2006, Mr. Chiplock asked if I would like to teach 5th grade again (in my former classroom and everything!!) I jumped at the chance to be back at Corpus Christi.

Where have you worked previously?
Besides the two schools mentioned above, I also taught at an elementary school in San Diego, California from 1991-1992. I taught 6th grade Math and Science at a Department of Defense school in Keflavik, Iceland from 1993 to 1995.

Where were you born (city and state/country) and live as a young child?
I was born in a small town in Maine called Fort Fairfield. It is in Northern Maine on the border of Canada. I lived there until I was 19 years old.

What was your elementary school, were you involved in any extracurricular clubs or sports and what funny thing do you remember most about it?
My elementary school was Fort Fairfield Elementary School. I was a Girl Scout when I was in Elementary school. I also started playing the clarinet when I was in 4th grade. Later on in Middle School and High School, I was in the Band and Chorus, as well as the Drama Club. I was a cheerleader for 4 years in High School. I did not play competitive sports, but I loved playing softball for fun with the kids in my neighborhood. We even formed a team and played kids from other neighborhoods! Something that wasn't not so much funny as it was different was that in every school I went to, a relative taught there!! I couldn't get in trouble because my parents would find out quickly! My Mom taught Kindergarten in the Elementary school, my Dad taught Language Arts in the Middle School and my Uncle taught Algebra in the High School!

Do you have family in the area?
I have been married for 28 years to my husband, Joe, who is also from Fort Fairfield. We were friends in High School and met when we were in CYO together! Our daughter, Amanda, is 25 and lives in Portland, Maine. She attended Corpus Christi in 7th and 8th grade. She then went on to Bishop Ireton High School. She is now an attorney with a law firm in Portland. Joe was in the Navy for twenty years, so we got to move around a lot. I enjoyed it very much.

What are your hobbies and interests?
I love to read in my "spare" time. I look forward to vacations so I can read a really good book. I love mystery stories. I also like to go to the gym to work out, and when I get the chance, I love to go hiking. My husband and I like to ride our bikes on the various bike trails around here. We also like to ride our motorcycle. When I have time, I sew window treatments and other home decorations for my family and myself.

What high school or college did you attend?
I attended University of Maine in Presque Isle, Maine and National University in San Diego, California.
