Peace Begins With Me

4/22/09

Earlier this year, Ms. Fabrizio, Corpus Christi's Art Teacher, led the seventh grade classes in a journey to explore and discover what Peace meant through a project titled "Peace Begins With Me".

"I got the idea from a Lion's Club International Peace Poster contest..." explained Ms. Fabrizio. "I thought it was an important and interesting subject for the students at Corpus Christi to also do art about, so I decided to make it a lesson here."

The students were paired with partners and asked to make a poster with images that represented what "peace" meant to them. They were asked to research the topic for creative ideas and combine them into the projects theme. Students were allowed to work with any of the classroom mediums and combined elements from drawing, painting and printed media for their creations.

"The most challenging part of the lesson for the students was trying to figure out how they personally could bring about change." said Ms. Fabrizio. "I wanted them to convey their message using drawings and design, and told them to use minimal language."

Mother Teresa once said, "Peace begins with a smile." The posters were displayed in the cafeteria at the beginning of the year and the beauty and sentiment portrayed in the Peace posters certainly would've made Mother Teresa smile.
