The Science of a Middle School Science Fair

3/05/09
Ask a Corpus Christi 7th or 8th grader what questions they have been pondering lately and they might respond with:

  • Do batteries work better in warm weather or cold weather?
  • What type of clothing should you wear to stay the warmest?
  • How much Vitamin C is really in an orange?
  • How does a solar-cell work?
  • What is Scooby Doo's blood pressure?

The reason for all this scientific questioning is the students have spent the past four months preparing for the annual 7th and 8th grade science fair that completed on Wednesday, March 4th.

Mrs. Thedwall, Corpus Christi middle school science teacher extraordinaire, explained that "The science fair project is designed to push students to question how the physical world around us works and how we can use that knowledge for practical application."

Each student had to research a hypothesis, define an experiment, run multiple trials to test the hypothesis, analyze the results, write a detailed report, produce a back board with all the information, and determine how their experiment could be improved or extended to solve other problems. Mrs. Thedwall has guided the students through the scientific research process.

"One hundred students participated in this year's science fair with some very interesting experiments being conducted this year from chemistry to medicine, from physics to zoology," explained Mrs. Thedwall. "We had a selection of parents and other volunteers from the local community who came in to review the projects. Each student was required to do an oral presentation of their project, which included a backboard, to the volunteer judges."

The ten students that were selected to proceed to the Diocesan Science Fair, held on Saturday, April 25th, and the field of science they represented, are as follows:
- Behavioral and Social Sciences Lilianna H.
- Engineering Alex C.
- Chemistry Abey Y.
- Chemistry Victoria M.
- Environmental Science Conor C.
- Environmental Science Josh M.
- Medicine & Health Nyla P.
- Microbiology Lynday M.
- Physics Tamika T.
- Zoology Christy P.

Congratulations to all our 2009 Science Fair participants!
