On April 26th, over 50 highly-trained Corpus Christi athletes competed in the 2009 CYO Track Meet. Despite the hot 90-degree weather and a never-ending day lasting from 7am-7pm, the varsity team placed 5th overall from the 19 teams that participated and the junior varsity team finished 8th.
Athletes new and old from grades 3-8 were grouped into varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams to participate in the competition. Varsity comprised the seventh and eighth grade, including 15 athletes, junior varsity had fifth and sixth graders and was comprised of 18 athletes, and the freshman team had 19 athletes from the third and fourth grades.
Miss Susan Zaycosky, Corpus Christi's Physical Education teacher, who led the Cougars in this year's event, said that "Overall, I feel the varsity team did very well as they placed 5th out of 19 teams. There were at least 20 runners on the teams this Spring that have not participated before so this was a 'learning year' for many of the students and I look forward to next year's meet with all of our seasoned athletes returning."
Mr. George Schafer, who co-coached the team this year with Miss Zaycosky, explained that "The meet is comprised of ten events with multiple heats which are held throughout the day. Each team participated in a subset of the events based on age group." The track and field events held were as follows:
- Relays (girls, boys and co-ed)
- 1600 meter run (grades 7 and 8)
- 800 meter run (grades 3 through 6)
- 400 meter run (all grades)
- 200 meter dash (all grades)
- 100 meter dash (grades 5 through 8)
- 55 meter dash (grades 3 and 4)
- Shot put (grades 6, 7 and 8)
- Softball throw (grades 3 through 5)
- Long jump
Miss Zaycosky and Mr. Schafer would like to thank the other teachers and parents that participated in this year's meet for their help and support and to congratulate all the athletes for a fine performance.
