Corpus Christi Named Blue Ribbon School

09/15/09
Corpus Christi was honored this week with one of the highest endorsements bestowed by the Department of Education to elementary or middle schools, the coveted "Blue Ribbon School of Excellence" award. This year's award was provided to only 314 schools in the nation and honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either academically superior, or have made dramatic gains in student achievement.

School Principal Laura Zybrick explained "This accomplishment was achieved through the hard work and dedication of the teachers, staff, students, parents and Mr. George Chiplock, former Principal. I'm thrilled and honored that this recognition has been awarded to Corpus Christi School. I can't think of a more deserving school community! I'm very proud to be a member of the Corpus Christi School family and look forward to our continuing success."

Corpus Christi was named a Blue Ribbon School along with only 13 other schools in Virginia. Schools receiving this honor are considered national models of excellence. Some of the highlights that the Department of Education reviewed in order to select Corpus Christi as a Blue Ribbon School included:
  • The Corpus Christi student body scores in the top 10% of the State of Virginia on standardized testing demonstrating the strength of the academic program
  • In 2008, roughly half of Corpus Christi's graduating class was recognized with Presidential Academic Excellence Awards, and 18 middle-school students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.
  • Corpus Christi's demographics reflect the rich cultural diversity of our eastern Fairfax County location

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement to high levels. In addition to being honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC, where each school receives a plaque and flag signifying their status, these schools serve as models for other schools throughout the nation.
